Our Curriculum

At EDG Nursery, we deliver a curriculum grounded in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) statutory framework, September 2025, while drawing creative inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach. This integrated curriculum supports children to learn through play and exploration in a rich, child-led, and responsive learning environment.
Areas of Learning under EYFS:
Prime Areas:
Personal, Social & Emotional Development (PSED)
Communication & Language (CL)
Physical Development (PD)
Specific Areas:
Literacy (L)
Mathematics (M)
Understanding the World (UTW)
Expressive Arts & Design (EAD)
We blend these with Reggio principles celebrating the child’s interests, natural curiosity, and creative expression. This is a philosophy of early years education built on respect, relationships, and the belief that children are capable, curious learners.
At EDG, this approach means:
1. The Child as a Capable Learner
We see every child as strong, resourceful, and full of potential. Instead of following a rigid plan, we build learning experiences around their interests, questions, and ideas.
2. The Environment as the “Third Teacher”
We design our spaces to be inspiring, natural, and thought-provoking. The room layout, resources, and even light and colour are intentional, encouraging children to explore, connect, and feel a sense of belonging.
3. Teachers as Co-Learners and Guides
Our educators don’t just “deliver” lessons, they work alongside children, asking questions, offering challenges, and extending their thinking. This creates a partnership in learning rather than a top-down instruction.
4. Learning Through Projects
Instead of isolated activities, children explore topics in depth over time for example, studying shadows, insects, or the post office through art, storytelling, construction, and outdoor play. This builds problem-solving, creativity, and resilience.
5. Documentation of Learning
We capture children’s thoughts, conversations, and creations through photographs, quotes, and displays. This makes learning visible to children, parents, and staff, and shows progress in a meaningful, personalised way.
6. Family and Community Partnership
Parents are not just observers they are active contributors to the life of the nursery. We value each family’s knowledge, culture, and involvement, and we link learning to the wider community whenever possible.
Our Inspiration

We are dedicated to providing children with all the necessary tools they need to get a head start in life.
Our approach to this is inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach; originated in the Italian town of the same name. This ideology means we encourage independent learning. We never tell our children what they can and can't do, what the right way of doing something is or even if some things are possible. We believe that children thrive off of exploration and experimentation. We encourage our children to ask the questions and let their curiosity guide them in their journey of discovery.
"What would happen if I mixed these two colours together?"
"What can I use to build my fort?"
"How high can I stack these blocks?"
One of the main pillars of this approach to learning is using all natural learning resources; such as: sticks, leaves, wooden toys, light/shadow, etc. to help our children understand more about the world around them.
We believe children can accomplish anything with the right support and that is what we are committed to providing.
